Thanks for this introduction to Ada Limon. I will read more poetry by her now. What an awesome gift from your daughter!!! Your grandma must have been a wise woman introducing you to Longfellow. His poem "The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls" was a mainstay of our poetry unit in American Lit. I always included the movie "Dead Poets' Society." I admire all you "poetry-gifted" people. Nice share! xoxo

I like Ada's conversational style of writing poetry. My grandma was a teacher by trade - retired by the time I was in school of course, so she practiced her teaching skills on me. I'm blessed to have had that time with her and I did gain an appreciation for lots of things, including poetry, because of her. Love "Dead Poet's Society"!

Such a beautiful & perfect gift❤️. My first introduction to poetry was 'The Man From Snowy River' by Banjo Patterson. I love his poem as it took me on an adventure.

Right?? She knew I would love it and I burst into tears when she gave it to me. She knew what I would love and she was so excited to give it to me. But the fact that when she met Ada it became a mission for her to do that for me.....that's special!

Wonderful reflection. If you enjoyed Hiawatha, I think you would also enjoy Canadian indigenous poet Pauline Johnson. I've written and commented about her a few times... and her connections to my non-indigenous family heritage. Available on Amazon.. Recommend Legends of Vancouver, Legends of the Capilano, Song My Paddle Sings, Flint and Feather.

What a great gift! I, too, love poetry. I find it sad that the schools don’t make kids memorize any poems or even have a poetry unit!

Kennadie had a poetry unit in 6th and 7th grade at SIA, but maybe that's not a focus in a lot of English classes anymore. If you start them young before they worry about all the rules of writing poetry, it will stick for life!
