I’m a true summer girl at heart, so autumn always leaves me feeling a bit nostalgic. I think it is probably the most visually beautiful season and I love the trees transitioning to dormancy. Prior to becoming bare and dead-looking, they put on the most dramatic display before the final curtain. I know there are scientific reasons for the changing colors, but I have to believe it’s a gift from the Creator before the naked trees are covered in frost and snow.
I seem to write a lot of poetry in the fall. The season is a litany of metaphors for life and I can never resist getting “flowy” with what I see and feel this time of year. So please indulge me one more ode to autumn as my next offering may be about how I feel about winter. Those are very different kinds of poems. 😂
Filtered gold of dawn’s first light
cuts chill of settled dew.
Leaves give way to pending change,
flocks of geese point south as true.
A fresh new day of wonder birthed
as colors transform overnight.
Promise of nature’s glorious array
as summer’s heat gives up the fight.
Time stands still for no one;
nothing stays the same.
Seasons turn and days advance,
harvest moons night skies do claim.
Surrender comes as first frost sweeps
and dims the vivid palette
Then drifting leaves are carried away
ushering winter’s frozen blanket.
Beautiful poem Cathey. I like “as summer’s heat gives up the fight” and “Surrender comes as first frost sweeps”. This time of year I do feel like we have to just let go of summer and start waiting for spring. It especially true with my beekeeping, there’s not much to do with them for the next few months.
You write so beautifully about Fall. I too see the Creator in the wonders of the season and also in the science behind it all ... which I also see as the work of the Creator that we are actually able to comprehend and understand.
Your poem's last line describes the big change we saw this morning from last night's hard frost. Most of the trees had dropped their leaves except for the many columnar Aspen ... which were radiant gold. Today they have lost their radiance and are browning off.
